As some of you saw we ran some awards at the end of the year and now people have had time to watch here are the results.

Imaginarium Art Green Goblin Update

Over the last few years Imaginarium Art has been working hard and making their way up the ranks within the statue community. One of the first projects I remember seeing from them was there concept for the Green Goblin. At first I was not too sure about it as the design was Green Goblin sitting on a chair that resembled something you would see at your grandma’s house or one of those garage sale items you know no one would ever buy. But the interesting thing about the piece was the concept of having the body switch to another base for a

totally different pose.

This idea went away for a while and we actually forgot about it till we was sent updates of the new concept. Imaginarium art has been sending us top secret updates throughout the last few months of the pose and idea for the base and I was really impressed by the unique and varied display options it offers.

The one base provides two different poses that I was thinking would make this standout from the rest.

Then Imaginarium go and do this…

They sent across two fully painted head sculpts. Painted by the super talented James Tce.

We are really excited to see how this piece turns out.

With several companies currently producing the character it is a challenge for companies to make their product stand out, but I believe Imaginarium Art have stepped up to that challenge and have definitely got our attention.

I am a self-taught artist from Kent, my artwork is in the style of

pop art, I’ve always been into art from a young age, I have always loved comic books,

from superman to batman anything that has good graphics I find myself drawn to. After

many years of figuring out what direction I wanted to take my art, I found a style that I

love, pop art but with a realistic feel it, when I got into art properly the two people I

enjoyed being like were Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo and as the years went on and I found

a love for comic book art I turned my attention to Alex Ross

That’s a easy one, it was for my son, a mix of his favorite superheroes, I painted it on his

bedroom wall to keep the monsters away whilst he slept. This is closely followed by the

Hhhhmmmmmmm another good question if was going back to my Julie Bell and Boris

Vallejo days, it would have to be the vampire hugging a human, the detail and shading of

that picture is unreal, especially the detail of the snake, you almost want him to turn her.

Second would be one of Alex Ross’s There is a lot by Alex Ross I like, but the one that

stands out to me is his superman holding up a building, I’ve always wanted to put my

own stamp on that, add in a few more heroes in the background make it the twin towers, a

selection of real heroes that dealt with 9.11.

I have no idea, it would have to be what I’ve mentioned above but as I get older I’m sure

there be something else, but my dream is to be recognized, artist as I am a little fish in a

I think both of the these pieces are stunning and really well put together. I mean the sculpt actually looks like the Captain America is wearing real material.

Do not get me wrong I just think that these are still really great looking pieces, but i just think if this was something another company like Sideshow collectibles was to do that people would attack them for it.

I personally do not care about the edition size, but there are a large number of collectors who do. If the edition size of a piece is announced when I buy it or as Sideshow do and say TBA, but to make an announcement and raise it after the fact I think is wrong and deceitful.

I hope Iron Studios can come up with a valid reason for this.

While in the process of typing this post I have received a message from a very reliable source.

“Please do not shoot the messenger! I spoke with a IS rep via messaging! He told me this was done as a special request from Marvel/Disney for that region for the Captain America and Iron Man statues due some licensing/rights issues. He said all future releases starting from Spider-man 1/4 will have an unified edition size. No more domestic and international editions.”

So expect the same increase in the Iron man too 🙁

So we will start with the classic Captain America – OG which has an edition size of 875 with the exclusive being a switch out soldiers helmet with a bullet hole in it to replace Ultron’s head under caps boot and as it was released in 2006 it is truly one of the originals for sure!!

It’s a monster in regards to weight being 20+lbs, but not in stature as I looked over the fellow collectors prized possessions twice before I noticed he was even there which was a shock to me to be honest!!

Let’s start on the broken bricks and rubble base which I found very thin, flat and although painted very well it had a squished pancake look to the bottom and I was bored of it almost instantly!!

I felt the tailoring and flaring in the trousers seriously unflattering and the buckle forgettable at best but then we get to the torso and WOW!!!

Magnificent, stunning, the gore group have done it again, Martin Canale rules all spring to mind as it has a fantastic body sculpt, but for me that is the only positive as well as the shield being the right size on this one!!!

The pose is stoic and iconic to say the least and from the neck to the waist its exceptional and I love the wings on the helmet, but the face sculpt has barely any features other than a granite chin and the eyes have a similar shape to the XM studios version which there was severe backlash about so clearly Sideshow slipped past with this unnoticed!!

I have heard all the talk about the Grail captain America classic piece with the exclusive selling for £700 – £1600 on the secondary market, but for me and Alex (I will speak for him) this was a big disappointment and the piece was lost among the Superman, Batman, Galactus and Hulks of a collection with it being 19 inches tall with an inch base he has been outgrown by the Giants of today!!

So Alex managed to bag himself an exclusive Captain America – Allied Charge on Hydra  from Sideshow Collectibles. Which surprised me somewhat due to the fact we are both not big Cap fans and he is meant to be a movie collector!!

The exclusive comes with a switch out Thompson SG machine gun which looks great and fits the pose well although I don’t recall him using guns very often! (again I am not a big fan so don’t shoot me if I am wrong) see what I did there? Lol

The pose is more dynamic than its predecessor and the mixed media smashes it to pieces with a utility belt with removable spade, hand gun etc
The head sculpt is a masterpiece and my favourite part of the piece, he looks stoic, composed and his eyes are dreamy!! Lol

This cap looks more mobile and agile compared to the body building Mr Olympia sculpt of the original. Which is where they captured the more movie based look I think!!

I do feel this piece captures a part of the movie franchise as well as the comics and I was surprised how much I liked it!! (More than Alex I think!!)

I have to say both pieces can get lost in a collection as they both lack presence which is a shame.
The new version shield (retro) is a disgusting joke as it appears like they used a sticker instead of painting it (tut tut tut) and the modern shield is a bit small and dainty!!

Buy the Captain America – Allied Charge on Hydra  if you love the modern day Cap who’s athletic, agile and commanding (oh and if you love the films as well as comics) as it is reasonable money and a solid 7-8 out of 10 piece for sure!! (this is where my money would go!!)

I have had the honour of reviewing some of the pieces considered the best pieces ever made and some have been worthy of that reputation (Wolf Predator LSF, Magneto on throne, Thor Classic and Spider-man Comiquette spring to my mind!) but this is one classic with a big reputation and a bigger price tag that missed the mark for both of us!!
