Halloween came and went and I have to say I was actually really excited about the idea of Spooktactlar. When the <a class=”affiliatestyle” href=”https://affiliates.sideshowtoy.com/Tracker.aspx?aid=3652&href=http%3a%2f%2fwww.sideshowtoy.com%2f” target=”_blank”>Sideshow Collectibles</a> email arrived to announce and I clicked the link to their website and saw the countdown clock. I got a lot of questions in my head and maybe got a bit too carried away…

Would the new Freddy Krueger come up for pre-order?

Maybe we would get to see more of the New Leatherface PF?

I am not going to look up the exact order of the reveals, but I believe the first was the new Lady Death who was revealed a SDCC2015 and NYCC2015.

She looks great and really fits with the Halloween theme of Spooktacular. So it kept the hope alive inside me that some great horror pieces were going to pop up throughout the next few days.

Ok so not really horror, well not horror at all, but I could forgive <a class=”affiliatestyle” href=”https://affiliates.sideshowtoy.com/Tracker.aspx?aid=3652&href=http%3a%2f%2fwww.sideshowtoy.com%2f” target=”_blank”>Sideshow Collectibles</a> for releasing their Loki PF. He’s an evil villain so I gave them some leeway on this one.

Only thing that did let it down was the fact there is not EX which the figure’s hand is perfectly posed to hold the cube. Guess Sideshow has saved me a few $ here as I can just order him from a UK store and skip the tax bill.

I really do not understand who works on the publicity for Sideshow. First of all they seem to tell us only a few days before that a pre-order will go live. Even PCS put out an email newsletter and give you a few weeks notice to prepare yourself.

Sideshow ran their Promo codes and I believe if you were super fast you could score $60 in points. I think I managed $35 and Geo got about $20. Both of us were not so fast.

Also the usual trick ran of offering deals of the products Sideshow cannot seem to sell. Like $100 of the Regular Engineer Premium format and I am sure a guest appearance of the Man of Steel Premium format was made at some point.

But all in all I have to say I was pretty disappointed by the whole experience and feel Sideshow have the products and the tools to make the event a lot better. I feel most of this was just down to the timing of some of their articles and releases. I hope Sideshow learnt from this and do better next year.

I would like to start by Thanking you Radd Titan for the interview and for following my work, it is an honor. I started with art many years ago drawing, sketching and trying to learn as many techniques as I could, then I just stopped and decided to start studying law here in Chile. After a long time I stepped into Sculpting as a way to express what I loved and I had the opportunity to send some of my work to Epic Games. Doing this plus the support from my girlfriend -who paints my work – I decided to start with art again, this time as a Full time thing; since then I’ve been sculpting for approximately 3 years and everything has been like a roller coaster.

I’ve learnt, and continue learning everyday, how to sculpt by watching tons of video tutorials from YouTube and by also following the amazing work from really talented artists like Martin Canale, Steve Wang, Jordu Schell and others; This has been of great help because here in Chile there aren’t really any kind of sculpting classes; Actually, living as an artist here is pretty much almost impossible.

Re-casting is a serious crime that affects out community and it is important that it is not supported on any level.

A spokes person from XM has stated “We are trying our best to investigate who and where did this….will take serious action on this. Please spread the words to support licensed companies products. If no people buy recast then re-caster will not cast it that very simple so please unite to banish the buyer….spread the words guys. XM need all the support from you guys”.

This is the box the one statue will come in and normally has some kind of print on the box and brief information on the item. Alex is a big fan of the art boxes that have the character background on, but in all honesty the box will be looked at when the statue arrives, but then will go in the attic for storage shortly after.

We think that when buying or selling a piece that that having no art box will loose you a good amount. When an item has no art box this normally means no Styrofoam… So if shipping without sadly means it will not arrive in one piece. Both Alex and Geo have brought statues from EBay that have been listed with no original box, but both took he gamble and the items arrived in pieces. In these cases the sellers did not use common sense when shipping and refunds were issued.

Alex actually traded a piece that is famous for breaking in shipping without the original box. He painstakingly carved out a Styrofoam cube with a soldering iron and likely got some kind of cyanide poisoning in the process, but the item arrived in one piece.

We both have brought items without original shippers and feel that it this should not really affect the value too much, but when selling we have had buyers ask for as much as £70 off due to no original shipper.

We feel the issue of boxes is down to the personal preference, but it will make an overall difference to the price. .

Over the last few years of collecting we have seen many ways of people storing boxes or even making use of them.

We are currently pretty lucky with collecting and storage of boxes as we both have a good sized storage in our attics, but it does not mean one day they will be full… Also boxes are getting bigger and with some of the latest additions the boxes do not fit through the hatch of our attic to store them.

Alex has even looked in to renting a local storage unit for his boxes and some of his collectibles, but the price in London seems to be the same as renting an apartment in other parts of the country. So it is out of the question for us, but we know a lot of people who rent units the other side of the pond.

Some of the best use of space has to go to some of the guys who use the XM studios or Cinemaquette boxes as podiums. You can get away with using these as they are made really sturdy and are pretty stylish looking boxes.

On Facebook there was a guy who remodelled his house and actually built a sub wall and overhead storage in the ceiling beams to store his boxes. Now that is dedication.

Also seen one collector who wraps all of his boxes in clear plastic to stop them getting damaged over time.

One of the funny things that happened the other month was Alex sold three pieces to make space and even though he has 50+ boxes in the attic that look pretty much identical to the average person. He went up in the attic and knew exactly where the boxes he required were and was out in seconds.

We think that even though boxes are big, ugly and take up a lot of room we will never destroy them as you never know what is around the corner. You may have it in your mind that you will never sell, but you just don’t know what drama may arise, or if simply you just loose interest in the hobby.

So we suggest that you always try to get hold of the original boxes where possible for piece of mind with shipping and worse case if you have to sell.

PCS Collectibles @ NYCC 2015

PCS Collectibles I feel put out a good amount this year and they managed to reach a wide audience. Again some pieces were from SDCC, but there was still more new that larger rival Sideshow Collectibles.

I also really like the way that Jerry Macaluso takes the time out to attend all of the shows.

Well what can we say with this? As soon as it was shown an email came out for PCS to say that the design is going to be changed as fan were not impressed and felt the pose looked like Cammy was slipping on a banana skin. Lets hope PCS come back with a better design. Again though top marks for listening to the fans.

I had reall high hopes for Mortal Kombat’s Kintero after seeing their Goro in hand. I felt that this was going to be a must order for me, but I just feel it is lacking something. The pose looks too similar to Goro, the paint does not looks as good, but I hope to see this in hand one day and I may be eating my words.

Out of all of the statues PCS had on display I have to say I was blown away by their Robocop. I am possibly bias as I am a huge fan of the original, but I few that Jerry and his team have really delivered on this piece. I already own the Sideshow Robocop and said that I will wait and see the PCS Robocop in hand to make a decision on which will stay in my collection. But I think that my Sideshow one will be finding it’s way on a sales pages or EBay in the near future.

Sideshow got across to the East coast this year and brought a wide range of statues to show, but pretty sure all of these were in San Diego 2015. The only difference was Supergirl’s new hand position that changed from the heavily criticized poorly executed salute (Shown in SDCC2015) to now looking like she just smelt a fart, is in shock and is trying to fan it away. Not sure which is better… or worse…

Sideshow managed to also bring a few more pieces across, such as New Storm trooper, Boba Fett, Batgirl, Classic Catwoman, Wolverine, Sabretooth, Spider-man… Zzzzzz. But all of these have been shown before or have even been received already by collectors.

I have to say there was a lot on offer from Sideshow, but nothing new. Maybe they should have saved a few of their pieces from SDCC for NYCC…

So for me I am afraid that Koto did not have anything that took my fancy at NYCC2015. All they had was the ArtFX and Bishoujo pieces that I know are very popular with collectors, but I have never personally collected myself.

I did have a momentary Geek- gasm when I saw a few photos and quick video clips of this Aliens Warrior Drone. I was really happy to see this as Koto had a small run of Alien collectibles a few years back that I felt was underrated to say the least.

Sadly this was quickly shut down for me as the piece is only 12th scale, but saying that I may still pick one up to go next to my computer.

The Alien Comes with 4 metal floor plates and can be displayed walking, climbing or upside down. Definitely a fun little piece for anyone.
